Kids' Cake Decorating Party at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide - Avon Cake

Looking for a party activity that keeps children busy and ends with something they love? Cake decorating is one of the easiest: each child decorates a cake with their own hands, then eats it. There's no baking and no cream to prepare, because our DIY cake kit arrives ready with piping bags, pearls and sprinkles.

Avon Cake DIY kit with coloured piping bags, pearls and sprinkles for a kids' cake decorating party

How many cakes do you need?

ChildrenWhat we suggestWhy
1–10, each with their ownOne cup per childEach child has their own cake and colours
2–3 decorating together4-inch cakeOne cake with 3 colours
6–8 decorating together6-inch cakeMore room and 6 colours
12–16 decorating together8-inch cakeA big shared cake

Each cup comes with 3 colours and two jars, so nobody has to wait for a turn. Our cake size guide has more on sizes.

Set up the table in 5 steps

  1. Cover the table with something washable or disposable. Sprinkles travel.
  2. Give each child a clear spot, with their cake and bags in front of them.
  3. Keep wet wipes close for sticky hands.
  4. Try a piping bag on a plate first, and show them how to squeeze gently.
  5. Use aprons or clothes you don't mind getting messy.

Ideas to make it more fun

  • Write your name: each child adds their name or first letter.
  • Pick a theme: space, the sea or flowers, chosen before they start.
  • Cake gallery: line up the finished cakes and take a photo.
  • Show and tell: each child explains what they made.
  • Silly awards: best colours, funniest drawing, most sprinkles. Everyone wins something.

By age

  • Younger children: sprinkles and pearls are easier than piping bags. Let them pipe big dots and scatter toppings on top.
  • Older children: they can manage hearts, flowers and stars. Try our easy decorating ideas.
  • Grown-ups: a shared 6-inch cake is a nice way to include the whole family.

Before the party

  • Choose a delivery slot that suits your party: 9am–2pm, 2pm–7pm or 7pm–midnight. The earliest available date shows on the product page.
  • Ask parents about allergies before the party.
  • Match the colours to your theme: choose from 8 colours when you order.

For the rest of the party, see our candles and balloons and kids' character cakes.
