Thinking about a kids' birthday party at home, but don't want to drown in details? A good party doesn't need a big budget or a venue. It needs four things: a cake, simple decorations, an activity and a short schedule. Here's the plan, step by step.
1. Set the number and the date
- Guests: count the children and adults first, because that decides the cake size.
- Length: two hours is enough for most parties, and less for the very young.
- Theme: one idea that ties the cake and decorations together, such as a favourite character or colour.
2. Choose the cake
The cake is the star. Pick a design from our character cakes for kids, such as the SpongeBob cake, or build your own in Design Your Cake.
| Guests | Size |
|---|---|
| 2–3 | 4-inch lunch box |
| 3–4 | 5 inch |
| 6–8 | 6 inch |
| 12–16 | 8 inch |
| 20–24 | 10 inch |
| 28–32 | 12 inch (book the day before) |
These are approximate. If you're between two sizes, take the bigger one. More in the cake size guide.
3. Simple decorations are enough
One tidy corner looks great in photos:
- Number balloon: one balloon per digit, 0 to 9, so a 10th birthday takes a 1 and a 0.
- Birthday headband: makes the birthday child stand out.
- Small Avon candles: for the big moment.
- Birthday topper: for the top of the cake.
You can add them to the same order as the cake. See birthday party add-ons.
4. An activity for half an hour
Kids need something to do, or the party turns into a race around the house. The easiest one is cake decorating: each child takes a cup from our DIY cake, decorates it and eats it. Each cup comes with 3 colours and two jars of pearls and sprinkles.

5. A two-hour schedule
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| First 20 minutes | Arrivals and free play |
| 30 minutes | A running-around game |
| 30 minutes | Cake decorating |
| 20 minutes | The cake, candles and song |
| Last 20 minutes | Food, light play and goodbyes |
6. The day before
- Confirm the delivery slot: we have 3 a day (9am–2pm, 2pm–7pm, 7pm–midnight). Choose one before the party starts, not during it.
- Set up the table: a cover, plates and wet wipes.
- Ask the parents whether any child has an allergy.

FAQ
How long should a kids' party be?
Two hours suits most ages, and less for the very young.
What size cake for 10 children?
An 8 inch serves 12–16, which also covers a few adults. With only small children, a 6 inch plus activity cups may be enough.
Can I order the cake and decorations together?
Yes. Add candles, balloons and toppers to the same order.
When should I order?
Regular sizes can be ordered for the same day while a slot is open, and a 12 inch needs booking the day before. For a fixed time, order early.
